The first post says it all Shalom, This is the home of the Pittsfield Jew. Sure its neat to read about Jews in Brooklyn who are very observant but how about a not so observant Jew who lives in the Mid West?

Hey, Pittsfield-jew! Want to be a
representative of Judaism?

For my world religions class, I'm writing a
paper on
what different religions --
primarily Hinduism, Buddhism, Judaism, and Islam -- teach about the meaning
of human suffering. I've done lots of book research, but I was
thinking that it would be good to find out what real people who are members of
the different religions actually think, too.

So I was
wondering if you'd be willing to answer the following questions for me in the
next couple of days. There are no right or wrong answers; I just want
to know your opinions and compare them with the opinions of people with
different backgrounds. It would be a big help if you could do
this.

Okay, on with
the questions:

1. What is your religious
background?

2. Suffering happens. Think of
natural disasters, like the recent tsunamis. Think of personal tragedies,
like sudden illness and untimely death. Think of ways that one person or
group harms another person or group, such as domestic violence or the Nazi
treatment of the Jews. What meaning does your religion give to
suffering? Why does suffering happen?

3. What comfort does your religion
provide to those who suffer?

4. What, if any, responsibility do
witnesses of suffering have towards those who suffer?

5. What, if anything, will happen to
those who cause others to suffer?

6. Are there particular scriptures or
other authoritative statements of your religion that lead you to these
beliefs?

7. Is there anything else I should have
asked?

8. May I quote you in my paper? If
so, what is your name?

I need to get your answers by this Friday,
April 29, in order to finish the paper on time. Thursday would be better!

Thanks loads for any help you can give
me!
